What is EMDR?
This video offers a critique of EMDR:
The information in this video is very good and mostly accurate. A couple of minor corrections are in order, however. Recent research has shown that the key component of EMDR is not eye movements per se, but bilateral stimulation of the nervous system, which can be done in various ways not involving eye movements. The host failed to mention that studies have shown not only that EMDR is as effective as other treatments for PTSD, but also tends to require fewer sessions--in other words, it is more efficient. This finding suggests that the bilateral stimulation does, in fact, make a difference in outcomes.
There are other important differences between EMDR and other effective therapies--most notably that you don’t have to talk about your traumas in detail with the therapist and there is no homework. These differences have been shown to greatly increase completion rates for EMDR compared with other therapies. Nevertheless, the video is right to assert that EMDR is both very effective and not necessarily for everyone.
